Kate Buxton is an independent commercial arbitrator with three decades of experience in private practice and decision-making roles in complex dispute resolution. Kate accepts appointments as a sole arbitrator and tribunal member in international and domestic (Australian) commercial arbitrations. She has been appointed as sole arbitrator in both institutional and ad hoc arbitrations and is experienced in proceedings determined under various institutional rules (UNCITRAL, ACICA, Resolution Institute), including on an expedited basis.
Kate is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and serves as a Councillor of CIArb’s Australian Branch. She is also a Fellow of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration and is listed on ACICA’s Panel of Arbitrators. Kate is a nationally accredited mediator (AMDRAS) and accepts briefs to manage facilitated outcomes for parties wishing to mediate complex commercial disputes.
Kate was first called to the Queensland Bar in 1997 and, after serving on various state and commonwealth tribunals for 15 years, was last called to the Bar in 2024. Kate has appeared in trials, arbitrations and appeals, and has also practised in London and the Channel Islands, with a public law, regulatory and commercial focus. She was appointed to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal in 2009, and to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in 2015, where she most recently served as a Senior Member. She was also a Member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal from 2013 to 2015. In 1994, Kate was associate to the Hon. Justice Moynihan in the Supreme Court of Queensland.
